21st Century Cures

The US House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee yesterday unveiled a long-awaited draft of legislation that would speed up the approval of new drugs and treatments (21st Century Cures Initiative discussion draft ) that calls for increased NIH funding, expedited approval processes for drugs that receive a breakthrough therapy designation and improved scientific access and outreach at FDA.

Our panelists are two of Virginia’s outstanding leaders in this area:

Robert J. Meyer, MD, inaugural Director of the Virginia Center for Translational and Regulatory Sciences (VCTRS) at University of Virginia. VCTRS was established to foster a multidisciplinary educational approach for individuals interested in translational and regulatory sciences, promulgate the most recent advances in regulatory methodologies, and engage in discovery science for improving regulatory processes for proposed and marketed products.  Dr. Meyer’s career spans academic medicine, leadership positions in FDA, and immediately prior to his current UVA role Vice President for Global Regulatory, Strategy, Policy and Safety at Merck & Company.

Gerard Moeller, MD is Director, VCU Center for Clinical and Translational Research, recipient of a $20 million Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) from the National Institutes of Health, making VCU the first academic health center in Virginia to join a national consortium of 60 research centers sponsored by the NIH’s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS). This network of academic research institutions accelerates the transformation of laboratory discoveries into treatments for patients, engages communities in clinical research and trains a new generation of clinical and translational researchers.
