This second event features H. Thomas (Tom) Watkins. Tom served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Human Genome Sciences, Inc., one of the world’s pioneering biotechnology companies, from 2004 until August 2012, when HGS was acquired by GlaxoSmithKline. Previously, Mr. Watkins served as President of TAP Pharmaceutical Products, and held a series of executive positions over the course of nearly twenty years with Abbott Laboratories. Currently, he serves as Chairman of the Board of Vanda Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and as a member of the Board of Directors of Horizon Pharma plc and the Strategic Advisory Board of WellDoc, Inc. From 2011-2013, Mr. Watkins served as Chair of the Board of Directors of BIO, the Biotechnology Innovation Organization.

Insights will introduce Charlottesville bioscience leaders to global ideas and contacts, and inform influential guests of the dynamic Charlottesville biohub. Insights is a year long, quarterly series hosted at i.Lab at UVA and other prominent sites on Grounds. The focus of each event will be a special guest - a nationally prominent leader of bioscience innovation and entrepreneurship from outside Charlottesville.

 

From 4:00 - 5:15 there will be a private reception, limited to the first 25 registrants.  Immediately following will be a public reception from 5:30-7:30, open to the entire bioscience community.

 

There is a suggested minimum donation of $25 per person. This donation will be used to support STEM education and STEM teacher enrichment statewide through the Virginia Bio Foundation.  For more information about the Foundation, click here.
