House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-7th, visited Richmond’s kaleo, Inc. for a tour and to host a roundtable including young people suffering from chronic or rare childhood diseases, bioscience business leaders and patient advocates to discuss his plans to increase federal research into cures for childhood diseases.

Rep. Cantor heard firsthand from children under treatment for serious chronic disease, including children managing the risk of severe allergic reaction anaphylactic shock with kaleo’s Auvi-Q epinephrine auto-injector.  Cantor discussed obstacles and opportunities for improvements in finding and commercializing cures and treatments for pediatric disease with Spencer Williamson and Eric Edwards of kaleo, Jeff Gallagher of Virginia Bio, parents and patient advocates.

Rep. Cantor announced during the event that he plans to seek additional federal funding for the National Institutes of Health, the nation's medical research agency through the Congressional appropriations process.  Cantor is also championing the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act, named for a girl from Leesburg, VA who had an inoperable brain tumor and passed away last year.  The legislation passed the House of Representatives in December and is now in the Senate, where both Virginia's senators, Democrats Timothy M. Kaine and Mark R. Warner, are sponsors. The bill would move $126 million over 10 years from the Presidential Election Campaign Fund to increased research of pediatric diseases and disorders at the National Institutes of Health.
