Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Chairman, Senate Judiciary Committee, recently announced that the patent bill aimed at addressing the problem of patent trolls was taken off the committee’s agenda for the year.   “Unfortunately, there has been no agreement on how to combat the scourge of patent trolls on our economy without burdening the companies and universities who rely on the patent system every day to protect their inventions.  We have heard repeated concerns that the House-passed bill went beyond the scope of addressing patent trolls, and would have severe unintended consequences on legitimate patent holders who employ thousands of Americans,” said Senator Leahy.

Virginia Bio has worked closely with BIO, PhRMA and other state BIO organizations to assure that legislative remedies to the patent troll problem are focused and do not unduly burden legitimate holders of patents or unnecessarily rewrite the patent enforcement system, which are the foundation of our innovation based industry.   We will continue to do so in the months ahead.
