IALR’s Research Develops New Idea Resulting in a Patent

The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) received a patent for developing a system that results in efficient micropropagation of high-quality plants in the field of bio-energy grasses that result in high survival rates in the greenhouse and in the field. Theoretically, the systems and methods developed by IALR scientists are capable of producing more than 700 billion plants from one single shoot in one year.

This is particularly important for the micropropagation of Miscanthus, a bio-energy grass that does not normally reproduce by seeds. Natural reproduction rates for one Miscanthus shoot is three to five shoots annually. The method patented by IALR can reproduce one shoot into ten shoots monthly. In a lab setting, this method can be extrapolated and result in more than 700 billion plants in one year. In addition to the large-scale production quantities, the quality of the plants propagated by IALR’s patented method are of higher quality than plants naturally found.

IALR scientists Chuansheng Mei, Ph.D. and Kedong Da, Ph.D. and former IALR technician Seonhwa Kim invented the system, method and media formulation for high-quality and large-scale micropropagation of graminaceous plants such as Micanthus and switchgrass. Their research took two years to complete and IALR is the assignee for the patent entitled “Methods and media formulations for large-scale and efficient micropropagation of bio-energy grasses” (Patent No.: US 9,055,721 B2).

The patent provides IALR with opportunities to license the method to a third party such as a bioenergy company.

IALR has two additional patents pending from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
