The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has partnered with the non-profit Center for Advancing Innovation (CAI) in an unprecedented initiative to encourage entrepreneurs to form startups using space technology. CAI is further collaborating with the Medical Center of the Americas Foundation (MCA) to orchestrate this initiative to create new entrepreneurial platforms and spur “net new” economic growth in the Paso del Norte region and around the globe. Their combined initiative is dubbed the SPACE RACE Challenge (http://www.space-race.org/) and leverages the benefits of the Startup NASA initiative, which has an unprecedented licensing arrangement, eliminating fees for the first three years of commercial use of NASA’s patented technologies.

CAI has a prestigious award-winning accelerator-challenge model with significant, prominent recognitions by the White House, honors from Health and Human Services and notable endorsements from several other reputable media outlets for the success of their past startup challenges, namely the Breast Cancer Startup Challenge and the Neuro Startup Challenge that together spun-out 32 startup companies and created over 1400 jobs. CAI’s novel challenge model introduces participants to risk mitigated, government-owned inventions/technologies that exhibit high commercialization potential and near-market readiness and simultaneously provides structured entrepreneurship training and exposure to world-class mentors to help drive their success.

Challenge participants choose an invention and write up a business plan during the six-month accelerator program and at the end of the challenge, winners receive a cash prize. The differentiating paradigm shift with this challenge is that MCA and Gazelle Futures are establishing a substantial seed fund that will serve to hyper-accelerate the startups R&D to allow them to get enough escape velocity to achieve Series A financing. Visit the event site for more information and to apply by March 27, 2016.
