As a co-chair of the We Work for Health Virginia coalition, Jeff Gallagher, CEO of Virginia BIO, served as a panelist on two town hall meetings with gubernatorial candidates Ken Cuccinelli and Terry McAuliffe on August 20th and 21st.  For an audience of more than 300 at each event, Jeff helped lead a discussion with both candidates about their visions for STEM education, research & development funding, and how to expand job opportunities for those in the life science sector.

Both candidates expressed an understanding of the important role of bioscience research and commercialization in the state, in creating well-paying jobs, spurring economic activity, providing faster cures, and improved health and lower health care costs for Virginians .  Mr. McAuliffe drew attention to the Biotech and Innovation plan he made public in recent weeks featuring increased limits on the Angel Investor tax credit incentive program and formation of the Virginia Biotechnology Commercialization Loan Program.  Attorney General Cuccinelli underscored the importance of maintaining and improving the business and tax climate in the state which would allow companies to succeed against competitors worldwide.

The We Work for Health forums were co-sponsored by PhRMA and hosted at the Pfizer facility in Richmond. Also participating in these events were Keenan Caldwell with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, Barry DuVal with the Virginia Chamber of Commerce and Jess Gilbart with the Lupus Foundation of America.
