Campaign Opens to Grow Jobs in Roanoke-Blacksburg Region
Thursday, November 7, 2013
The Roanoke Blacksburg Innovation Blueprint launched a $100k
crowdfunding campaign this week with the goal of supporting 100 businesses and
startups, attracting $75M in venture capital, and helping to create 1500 jobs
over the next 3 years in the Roanoke-Blacksburg region.
The Blueprint has been guided by
those that share a vision for a vibrant regional economy. Over 100 business and education leaders have
volunteered their time and energy to this effort. The Roanoke – Blacksburg Innovation Network
(RBIN), a 501 (c)(3) non-profit, is the Blueprint’s hub. The vision is
bold, drafted in collaboration with major institutions in the region,
local companies, mentors, entrepreneurs, and community leaders.
In order to meet that goal, money collected from this campaign
will go towards:
- Building out a mentor and ambassador program, making it easy for
innovators to connect with local mentors.
- Establishing space in both Roanoke and Blacksburg to help facilitate
mentoring and ideation.
- Talent development and recruitment including a portal project
that will act as a single point of contact for STEM and intern program between
the science and tech community and educational institutions.
- Accelerating the commercialization of new technologies.
Specifically, a tech transfer mentoring group will be set up which will include
investors and serial entrepreneurs who are proactively seeking research that
has commercial potential and mentoring researchers through the process.
