On Thursday, October 9th, science teachers from public and private schools as well as community colleges across the Commonwealth of Virginia will descend on local life science companies to learn first-hand how businesses use science to improve human health and open career possibilities for students. Held in conjunction with Virginia’s Science Festival week, the statewide BioTeach event will promote collaboration between Virginia educators and the bioscience business community to nurture student interest in bioscience and related technology, engineering and math (BioSTEM) careers.

Created by the Virginia Bio Foundation in partnership with the Virginia Department of Education Office of Science and Health Education and the Office of Virginia STEM, BioTeach will rally teachers and the bioscience business community around BioSTEM education. They will discuss opportunities to ignite student interest in biotechnology careers, where science and discovery are transformed into technologies, products and services that solve critical healthcare needs.

“We are thrilled to have this opportunity to connect science teachers to the business of bioscience,” said Eric Rhoades, Director of the Virginia DOE Office of Science and Health Education. “Our teachers are the most important influencers in students’ desires to pursue career paths.”

Six bioscience organizations from across the state will participate including the Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (Richmond), Engineered BioPharmaceuticals (Danville), HemoShear (Charlottesville), LifeNet Health (Virginia Beach), Novozymes Biologicals (Salem) and TECHLAB (Blacksburg).

“This has been a well-coordinated effort with the Commonwealth’s education leadership,” added Jim Powers, Chairman of the Virginia Bio Foundation and CEO of HemoShear, LLC. “We hope that this event will lead to lasting programs that directly connect bioscience businesses with teachers and their students to provide stimulating exposure to what our companies do and the career possibilities.”
