BEAM Diagnostics

BEAM Diagnostics is hoping to develop an app that allows doctors to learn about people’s alcohol use, but without asking the awkward questions. It’s built on top of decades of research that has found doctors can learn a lot more about someone’s drinking habits if they rethink the way they approach the subject.

The company hopes to create a mobile app that nurses would use when they take patient vitals. They would administer 18 questions that don’t ask about past alcohol use. Instead, the app might ask how much alcohol a patient would order if they were at a bar where each drink cost $3.50. Doctors would receive the results before they see the patient and could track changes over time to spot developing issues.
