Cupron, developer of a copper-based antimicrobial technology, has developed a first-of-its-kind antifungal sock that is poised to transform foot care for persons with diabetes.

The PRO Therapy System, confirmed by the federal government to effectively kill 99.9 percent of Trichophyton mentagrophytes (Athlete’s Foot fungus) after 12 hours of contact with the sock, will be available beginning this fall. The socks initially will be targeted to diabetics, given their higher risk for foot infections and related complications. Studies show that diabetics are up to five times more susceptible to fungal infections on the foot than those without diabetes.

The revolutionary impact of Cupron’s copper-infused fibers on the diabetic foot, specifically its ability to kill Athlete’s Foot fungus, has been studied and published in leading scientific journals. In one study of 56 patients with severe Athlete’s Foot, a significant improvement of the medical symptoms in all patients was seen within nine days of wearing socks made with Cupron fibers.

The Cupron technology was employed in socks provided to the Chilean miners, who were trapped for 69 days underground in 2010 and who emerged with their feet in a remarkably healthy condition. The miners and their doctors directly credited the Cupron socks with protecting the miner’s feet. Cupron also is working with NASA to test the effectiveness of antimicrobial textiles in a simulated space environment over a 120-day period as part of NASA’s HI-SEAS program.
